Pruning in March is highly recommended because the chance of winter injury has substantially diminished and the likelihood of receiving extremely low temperatures has passed.
When there aren't any leaves on the trees, it is easy to see the tree structure so that you can see where the appropriate cuts should be made. Leaves and buds have not yet swollen so they will not be damaged by falling limbs or branch prunings.
