We are noticing that many lawns are being cut too short. When you remove more than 1/3 of the top growth with any one mowing, you are weakening the plant. The crown of your plant will be damaged and the grass starts to focus all its energy on repairing the damage. Your lawn will start to thin out causing weeds and moss to fill in those thin spots and will allow insects and diseases to seize their moment and attack. Be sure to leave your lawn at 2 ½ to 3 ½ inches to ensure a healthy lawn.
A small amount of rain will not give your lawn what it needs to green up nicely. Your lawn needs 30 minutes per zone every other day at this time of year. Once we get into the heat of summer, that schedule may need to be increased depending on conditions such as drought and/or climate change.
About an hour and a half after you have watered, take a 6” screwdriver and push it into various places in your lawn. If the screwdriver goes in easily, you are watering enough. If you cannot push the screwdriver all the way in, you need to increase the amount of water for the lawn.
At least 1" to 1 1/2" of water per week is recommended. If you have an irrigation system, be sure to check your sprinkler heads to ensure they are not clogged and that they are working properly. If you do not have an irrigation system, using a water gauge is another great way to determine if your lawn is getting the water it needs.
