During January and February, cold pine borer insects are not active.
From April to December, these pine borers can smell fresh pitch pine. Therefore, if you prune the tree's branches during this time, the borers will be able to locate the tree and can infest and destroy it along with other pine trees.
When a pine tree is affected, you will see a lot of the pine tree needles turning brown and/or many pitch tubes on the tree’s lower trunk. At this point, the beetles, and the fungus they bring with them, have already done enough damage that the tree will likely die.
The only thing to do is to remove the tree to help prevent the spread of pine bark beetles to other trees.
