Organic matter covering your lawn can block the growth of new grass, welcome unwanted pests and trigger mold growth. To avoid these problems, clean up any debris at the first opportunity. Keeping your lawn free of leaves and debris throughout the winter months will keep it from suffocating and thinning out.
Although it can sometimes feel like spring in the early part of the year, that does not mean winter is over.
DO NOT be tempted in any spring-like weather in January/February to fertilize your lawn. Your grass has not come out of dormancy yet and cannot absorb the nutrients in the fertilizer.
We also recommend that you AVOID dethatching your lawn in any spring-like conditions at this time. Dethatching dormant turf grass during the winter months can damage the plant which will limit its ability to recover.
